Three Goals for PSUMC
These three goals have been chosen by the Church Council and the PSUMC community as the focus for our ministry over the next two years.
Increase the economic and racial diversity of the congregation, reflecting the rich diversity of God's children, giving special attention to the marginalized.
Eleven o'clock Sunday morning remains the most segregated hour in America. PSUMC, like most churches, reflects the homogeneity of our culture more than the priorities of Jesus. We will be in conversation with members of different economic and racial groups, study the demographics of our area, research religion and race in the church, and consider changes in our community and worship life that might broaden PSUMC's diversity. changes in our community and worship life that might broaden PSUMC's diversity.
Keep our ministry focused by clearly articulating our vision, communicating it consistently, and supporting it organizationally.
Our primary mission is to create a loving, supportive fellowship that equips people for ministry and the work of social justice in our families, community, and world. The church easily loses its clarity of purpose without the constant reiteration of its mission and an organizational structure that supports it. We gather for worship, connect through outreach, form communities of support and accountability through small groups, share knowledge and skills for ministry through education, and are sent as faith-filled people to bring healing to the world. Organizationally, we will be flexible and adaptive in order to allow opportunities for individuals to follow their calling and use their gifts for creating and participating in ministry. We seek to minimize meetings and maximize ministry and social action.
Articulate and share Jesus' vision of a just and loving world by mobilizing the PSUMC community for leadership in the environmental and social justice movements.
We believe that God has entrusted us with the care of creation, and that creation is in crisis. Greed and neglect have caused widespread poverty, disease, the degradation of our living environment, and the proliferation of weapons and violence. PSUMC pledges to work for environmental and social justice through education, advocacy, and action. We pledge to heed the UMC Council of Bishops' call to hope and action by "challenging those whose policies and practices neglect the poor, exploit the weak, hasten global warming, and produce more weapons."
