Park Slope United Methodist Church

Our Pastor

Reverend Herb Miller came to PSUMC in July of 2004. His ministry flows from a conviction that Christ calls us to both an inward journey of prayer and study and an outward journey of ministry to a world in need.

As a leader of worship, Herb strives to build a warm, welcoming environment focused on hearing and responding to the Scriptures. In his preaching, he aims to engage both heart and mind, more inclined to posing questions than providing answers.

Vocationally, he is interested in liturgy, adult education and the cultivation of lay leadership. The main focus of his ministry is in nurturing the two primary movements of a life with God: A life of prayer, contemplation and study, and secondly, a life of ministry with the sick, hurting and marginalized who were of special concern to Jesus. Herb searches for structures and practice that will support both. In the words of Elizabeth O'Connor, "The deepening of a life with God is not spontaneous. People do not just become great Christians. They grow as they make certain purposeful responses to life and to the grace of God."

In addition to leading worship on Sundays, Herb conducts a Wednesday evening Taizé service, leads adult and confirmation classes and is active in the social service activities of the church.

Herb has long sought and found inspiration in the Taizé monastic community in France. More recently he has been inspired by Church of the Saviour in Washington DC. where he took a sabbatical exploring a ministry that balances contemplation with social action.

Before coming to PSUMC, Herb served Diamond Hill United Methodist Church in Greenwich CT for 14 years. Prior to that Herb had served for 5 years at Lakeville United Methodist Church in Lakeville CT.

Herb received his Master’s of Divinity from Yale in 1985.
