Overview
Living a life with God will naturally turn us towards ministry in the world God loves. PSUMC provides hands-on ministry to those in need and works to change the structures that create need, world destabilization, and a toxic environment.

The official work of ministry and social justice at PSUMC is carried by three committees:
- The Social Action Committee works more on the political front -- organizing protests, letter-writing campaigns, and informational forums.
- The Mission Committee provides opportunities to be in ministry with those in need
- The Reconciling Committee focuses on the full inclusion of lesbian, gay, transgendered and bisexual individuals in every facet of church life.
Ministries include:
- Running a small shelter for homeless men one day a week.
- An English As A Second Language program for the local immigrant population.
- Aggressive pursuit of change in Methodist church policy regarding gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people.
- Marching in the Manhattan and Brooklyn LGBT pride parades.
- Opposition to the American conquest of Iraq and Afghanistan. expressed through delegations to anti‑war protests in New York City and Washington and vigils in the Park Slope neighborhood.
- Fiscal sponsorship of a group working to assist East Asians in the Coney Island Avenue neighborhood as they experience increased racism and repressive interventions under “Homeland Security” measures.
- Founding membership in the Brooklyn Community Action Network, a group of local activist organizations seeking to share resources and knowledge.
- A sister‑church relationship with La Merced Roman
Catholic Church in Managua, Nicaragua.
