About This Site
Psumc.net first went online in March 2002. It underwent its first major redesign since that time in 2006.
The new site has been coded to conform to the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) guidelines, standards aimed at making the web accessible and useful to every type of user. By adhering to standards, the site should play well with mutliple browsers and devices -- including screen readers-- while making economical use of bandwidth. The new site also features several usability enhancements, including a more explicit information hierarchy and navigation system. Existing content has been updated, reorganized and amply supplemented with additional content. The site now features a calendar, a news page, photo albums and a members section for facillitating the work of church volunteers.
For sighted users, the site works best in Safari, Firefox and Opera browsers. While the site will render well in Internet Explorer, the developer recommends against the use of that browser for the following reasons:
- poor implementation of web standards adds to development time and cost
- chronic security vulnerabilities
- general crappiness, lack of features
The site is updated and published through Hypercontent, an open-source content management framework developed at Columbia University. Using Hypercontent, non-technical volunteers can author and publish content from any computer with a browser and a web connection. The site calendar is built on WebCalendar, a robust, open-source calendar application.
