Park Slope United Methodist Church

Music, Choir and Arts Program

The music ministry at PSUMC is vibrant and thriving. Ours is a singing church, a congregation that values creativity and an eclectic range of musical expressions. People who wish to express their faith with voice or instruments will find a welcoming home here.

PSUMC Choir, Summer Picnic 2006

Senior Choir

We have a dynamic 30+voice choir which sings every Sunday, from September through June. Friendly, unpretentious, deeply spiritual, a little unruly, the choir is a source of fellowship at the heart of the church community, providing a place to harmonize with friends, learn new anthems, and sing old favorites. Our anthems range in difficulty from easy 2-part rounds to challenging 6-part sacred classics. Some choir members do not read music, but all have enthusiasm, passion, and spirit.

We rehearse on Sunday mornings for one crisp hour before church (9:45-10:45). There are no auditions and consistency of attendance, while desired, is not required. The time commitment to belong to this choir is minimal, but punctuality is expected. In addition to singing in Sunday worship, choir members enjoy picnics, parties, seasonal anthem read-throughs, and occasional outings to nursing homes and concerts. Once a year we celebrate Choir Sunday, a day to acknowledge the gift of music to the vitality of our worship.

Beautiful City Singers

Our children’s choir is open to children in grades 1-7. It rehearses after church twice a month and sings in worship once a month, September through June. In addition to singing, the choir children learn about the relationship of sacred music to the Bible, church history, the liturgical year, the elements of worship, and the sacraments. Using a variety of fun activities and storytelling, the children also learn about the hymnal and hymn composers.

Taize

The music ministry at PSUMC  includes a weekly Taize service –  a time of silence, prayer, and chanting to the accompaniment of piano and flute or guitar. This service has deepened our experience of sacred music.

If you have questions about any aspect of the PSUMC Music Ministry, see Pam after church on Sundays, leave a message for her at the church office via phone or email.
