June 6 "First Friday" Film: An Activist Grandma
History fans will find a rare treat on June 6 at 7:30pm with the screening of Sticking to the Union, at the church, in the sancuary, 6th Avenue and 8th Street in Brooklyn. The presentation is an oral history on film by Susan Bolles, who interviewed her grandmother about her life as a union organizer with the Amalgamated Clothing Workers in the 1930s. It is part of the First Friday Film Series sponsored by the Social Action Committee of the church. The sceening is free.
The filmed interview includes historic photographs and bears witness to the idealism and challenges facing her grandmother, Louise Gugino Shanberg, as she worked in the garment industry in during the depression. This interview by Bolles, an amateur film maker, was supported in part by the Blaufarb Fund for Documentary Film at the Tamiment Library, New York University.
