PSUMC Opens New Soup Kitchen To Provide A Weekly Meal
PSUMC is starting a new mission program: SUNDAY DINNER – a weekly meal for the hungry. Our goal is to provide a hot lunch each Sunday to our neighbors in need, on the one day of the week when area soup kitchens are closed. We are in the midst of planning this endeavor, and hope to start offering Sunday Dinner sometime in February.
You are probably aware that more people than ever are turning to New York City soup kitchens during these hard economic times, and this will only get worse in 2009. The PSUMC community is blessed with resources, volunteer labor, and – soon – a brand new kitchen! Approximately 10 PSUMC members have formed a “Stirring Committee” to mix up these elements to respond to Christ’s call to be in fellowship with the most vulnerable people in our midst. We remember Jesus’ words as related by Matthew (25:31-46) -- that in offering food, drink and welcome to “the least” of our brothers and sisters, we will find Jesus in our midst.
Would you like to be a part of this effort? There are many ways you can help. You could join one of the teams of approximately 12 volunteers which take responsibility one Sunday each month for cooking, serving and clean-up. You could help with background coordination, such as assisting with soliciting/purchasing supplies, or making reminder phone calls to volunteers. You could pledge financial support to help cover Sunday Dinner expenses, which will range from provisioning to volunteer training. You can volunteer online by clicking the following Volunteer Forms . Or, you can fill out a form at church and place it in the offering plate.
We hear a call and are figuring out how to answer it. Do you hear it too? In reaching out to the hungry in our midst, we can create a stronger, inclusive community. We hope you will be a part of it in whatever way you can.
