PSUMC Supports Respite Shelter at Old First Reformed Church

Hands breaking bread

From July 24 to July 29, eighteen people volunteered on behalf of PSUMC to maintain the CAMBA respite shelter for five nights at Old First Reformed Church. Fourteen men used the shelter, and each night one to two PSUMC volunteers brought and served dinner, and two stayed overnight with the men.

CAMBA is "a non-profit agency that provides services that connect people with opportunities to enhance their quality of life," and they reach over 45,000 individuals and families each year. The respite shelter is one of their programs, which provides food and shelter for several men. The shelter rotates between various sites throughout the year, and - in an interfaith, ecumenical effort - local churches and synagogues take turns supporting the needs of the shelter.

While temporary shelter is only one small part to address the crises of housing and economic injustice, volunteer opportunities like CAMBA respite shelter keep our work as a Church grounded in the realities of oppression and injustice. We hope that the experience of sharing a meal and a night with people experiencing homelessness can have the transformative power that leads to greater social change and God's vision of jutice.

Thank you so much to all those who supported the shelter. If you are interested in participating in this program stay tuned for next summer's volunteer opportunities!
