The music ministry at PSUMC is vibrant and thriving. Ours is a singing church, a congregation that values creativity and an eclectic range of musical expressions. In worship, we frequently use rounds and three part songs and occasionally add descants and unusual accompaniments to enhance our congregational singing. Once a month we have a pre-worship Hymn Sing. People who wish to express their faith with voice or instruments will find a welcoming home here.
Our dynamic 30+ voice Church Choir, led by Music Director Pam McAllister, sings every Sunday, from September through June. Friendly, unpretentious, deeply spiritual, a little unruly, the Church Choir is a source of fellowship at the heart of the church community, providing a place to harmonize with friends, learn new anthems, and sing old favorites.
Our anthems range in difficulty from easy two-part rounds to challenging six-part sacred classics. In addition to singing in Sunday worship, choir members enjoy picnics, parties, seasonal anthem read-throughs, and occasional outings to concerts and sacred music workshops. Once a year we celebrate Music Ministry Sunday, a day to acknowledge the gift of music to the vitality of our worship.
The Church Choir rehearses on Sunday mornings for one crisp hour before church (9:45-10:45 A.M.). There are no auditions. Consistency of attendance, while desired, is not required. The time commitment is minimal, but punctuality is expected.
The music ministry at PSUMC includes a mid-week Taizé service on Wednesday evenings from 7:30-8:00 P.M. This time of silence, prayer, and chanting by candlelight to the accompaniment of piano and flute or guitar has deepened our experience of sacred music.
Involvement of Individual Musicians
PSUMC has attracted an array of musicians and music-lovers to our doors. Encouraged to participate, they perform as soloists, sing in small ensembles, or play instrumental music in worship (classical guitar, percussion, flute, French horn, trumpet, trombone, bowed psaltery, glockenspiel, steel drum, violin, viola, piano). PSUMC is also home to a number of composers. Conscious effort has been made to involve the many talented and generous people of this creativity-rich, musically-engaged congregation. Exploring our faith through a variety of musical expressions is central to worship at PSUMC, and we are indeed blessed.
